Final Portfolio format

April, 22nd 2006

In case you hadn’t noticed, the semester has pretty much ended. If you’re still waiting to get started on that special project that’ll make the difference between a C- and an A+, you’re pretty much hosed.

If, however, you merely need to print up or render your last bit of work and get your documentation together on a CD or DVD in time for the final crit, you have plenty of time. Here are some things to bear in mind as you wrap things up:

Printing takes time. Plan ahead. In order to produce the print edition for the class, you’ll need to work together and constantly.
You cannot pass this class without submitting appropriate documentation of your work. For the sake of simplicity and in light of the time we have left, I have narrowed the range of suitable documentation formats to only the following:

All work will be submitted on CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. Disk and envelope or jewel case must be clearly labled with your name, the class number, and the title of your project–if there is one.
Disks must play on both Mac or PC. No exceptions. Disk must include the following:

1. Artist’s statement in PDF format only.
2. Image index in PDF format that lists file name, title, date, dimensions in inches or centimeters (pick one and stick with it), media. As regards media designation, listing an image as “digital image” will totally piss me off. That tells the viewer absolutely nothing. The prints we make in our lab are listed two ways: the generic media designation is “7-Color Pigment Inkjet on XX Paper (where XX designates the exact paper type, such as Somerset Velvet or Epson Premium Luster). The more common designation is to use the trade name and list them as “Ultrachrome Prints on XX Paper”. Your choice.
3. Letter-size JPG contact sheets that contain thumbnails of all images on disk with file name captions–as many as are required.
4. Your image files in RGB JPEG format. Files must be exactly 1280 pixels across. Height is variable, but make sure the width is EXACTLY 1280. Compression setting should be 8 (lowest “high” setting).
5. Any other relevant files (such as HTML documents, Flash files, Quicktime VR files, video, etc. These too must be logged on your Index page and identified just as specifically as images.
6. Finally, if you are participating in the Print Suite, you must come to the final crit with a boxed set of twenty 11 x 14″ archival prints of the image of your choosing. Prints should be signed and numbered in advance.

I will not accept work in any other format. DO NOT drop everything into Powerpoint and cast it to your favorite Britney Spears song as a soundtrack. If you must include a slide show that auto-plays, let me show you how to do it as a PDF or Flash file.

I will go over all this stuff in class on Tuesday and Wednesday. Come prepared with any questions. Don’t miss any more classes. This is the end.
