Troy Night Out

The following announcements are clipped from the Tiena list:

How could there be a better Friday? Fortify yourself with the gustatory and aesthetic offerings of Troy Night Out, then head slightly uphill for free performances of live, customized audio-visual wonder. It’s inspiration at a totally manageable altitude! Your senses will thank you, each and every one!

Custom Control

Friday, October 26 at 8 PM

Heffner Alumni House, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 1301 Peoples Ave. Troy, NY

This performance is free and open to the public. Parking will be available in the lot behind the venue. There will be signs to direct you to the event.

EMPAC, in conjunction with the Arts Department at Rensselaer and the iEAR Presents series, invites you to Custom Control, an evening of three performances for which artists have built their own personal audio-and-video performance tools.

The first performance, I.C.You, is a film that is being manipulated and performed live by Sue Costabile and Laetitia Sonami. Based on a script by poet Tom Sleigh, I.C.You follows a truck driver delivering ice for the Universe Company. His job is to keep America cold. Sonami and Costabile open windows into his existence through photographs, drawings, videos, shadow theater, and miniature lighting rigs.

By way of specifically programmed computer code, guitarist Manrico Montero, aka Karras, and video artist R. Luke Dubois create an improvised collaboration of sound and video titled Night Breeze. Montero’s washes of layered guitar interact with DuBois’ live-camera-based imagery to create an experience that translates the rich sonic language of Montero’s playing into a cinematic event.

The meeting of two mad scientists, composer Bobby Previte and video artist Benton-C Bainbridge, inspired the performance Dialed In. Dialed In is a true dialog between sight and sound: a live audiovisual performance and a collection of music movies. Previte’s music is an ambitious, live, solo, electronic-drum work . Multiple movements will be performed in real time, with no loops, no laptops and no overdubbing. Bainbridge responds by freely grabbing from personal archives of video obscura, altering them beyond recognition, then recomposing them in a real-time process much like Previte’s kit-triggered music. Each using obsolete and forgotten technology scavenged from the tech dump, Bainbridge warps video into strange shapes while Previte elevates raw sound into listenable music.

Please note Custom Control is just one event in an initiative by the Electronic Arts Department titled Tools – Analogs and Intersections. This 2007 - 2008 series of events will include workshops, lectures, an exhibition and publications, focusing on artists who develop their own electronic and /or digital tools for video and audio in performance.

This performance is free and open to the public. Parking will be available in the lot behind the venue. There will be signs to direct you to the event.

Tosca Grille
200 Broadway, Troy, New York
FREE / got to be 18 to get in (ID required - please make sure you
look like your ID, regardless your awesome costume)

When in doubt, always look to The Misfits for inspiration /
guidance / relevant hairstyle guidance. And what do The Misfits
champion above all else? Being short and beefy? No. Halloween.
Yes! Children in heat, unite! Now is the time of year when pumpkins
are orange, treats are usually better than tricks (silly rabbit), and
the good people behind The Official Unofficial Troy Night Out
Afterparty do it up Halloween-style. If we had torpedoes (and if
everything goes according to plan, we will), they too would come to
this skullduggery, take advantage of the drink specials (only for
those torpedos in costumes - well, it would work for you too if you
rock a costume), check out the wild installations, and dance. Yes,
dance! Mommy, can I go out and dance tonight? If she says no…
Well, I know a train….

In conclusion: Halloween! Tosca! Hoop-la! Still Free! Drink
costumes for those in special! Prizes! Come as the Tooth Fairy!
Wear a freaking costume! Play well with others! This is a little
long for a succinct conclusion! Hoop-la!
